Historically, much of Northern Virginia was farmland. This was still true into the 1960’s of Sterling Park.In the early 20^thcentury, Jessie Hughes dairy farm bordered Route 7 and Fred Franklin Tavenner, a relative of Benjamin Franklin, ran Sterling Farm for which Sterling, VA is named. Sterling is located in Loudoun County, Forbes Magazine’s April 2013 issuenamed Loudoun County as the wealthiest county in the nation.

Sterling is home to the Baltimore/Washington office of the National Weather Service Forecast. An interesting insight into Sterling’s history is its relationship with Dulles, VA. In the 1980’s the United States Postal Service was successfully lobbied to allow Sterling businesses and residents in zip code 20166 to use the name Dulles in place of Sterling. The actual city name of zip code 20166 remains Sterling.  The 20166 zip code is located closest to Dulles Airport. Permitting this name change allowed business owners and residents in the Dulles area an immediate international presence in the city name.

This obviously worked; Dulles, named after John Foster Dulles, Eisenhower’s Secretary of State, is now the headquarters of Orbital Sciences Corporation. GEOEYE is located just outside of Dulles in Herndon. ODIN Technologies, the internet giant,AOL, both were headquartered in Dulles as was the telecommunication giant, MCI.

Dulles is also home to the 1757 Golf Club, named for the year Loudoun County was established, which claims it is, “The Ultimate Golf Experience” in Northern Virginia. After your round the 1757 Restaurant boasts of “The finest in American cuisine available 7 days a week”.

Sterling is also the location of the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, one of the best Community Colleges in the nation. Park View High School home of the Patriots is located in Sterling and is committed to excellence in academics and athletics.

Sterling offers you a lot to do athletically also, there is: Sterling Swim and Golf Club, Claude Moore Park, Dulles Sportsplex, and Dulles Golf Center & Sports Park.

One of the finest shopping malls in Northern Virginia is: Dulles Town Center and a great retail center can be found at the: Dulles 28 Center.  Businesses come from around the world to showcase their merchandise and product lines at the Dulles Expo Center.
