Haymarket, VA was charted in the late eighteen century and is located in Northwestern Prince William County.  The city developed around the intersection of Old Carolina Road (Jefferson Street) and Dumfries Road (Route 55/Washington Street). Therefore, downtown Haymarket is located at the intersection of Washington and Jefferson streets. Outside of Haymarket, Rt. 55 is also known today as John Marshall Highway. The name Old Carolina Road comes from the historic Indian hunting path that the early American settlers used to travel from South Carolina to Pennsylvania.

The reason Old Carolina Road becomes Jefferson Rd in downtown Haymarket is likely because Thomas Jefferson mapped the area.  Jefferson’s map references an historic Haymarket building called the Red House Tavern, a Haymarket historical landmark, eventually shortened to the Red House. During the Civil War Haymarket burned to the ground and was almost completely destroyed. The Red House Tavern was burned down also. Only St. Paul’s Church and three small houses escaped the fires.The Haymarket Museum,while helpful and informative, especially their map section, is a work in progress. It does offer insight to Haymarket’s history but is currently closed. Overtime, Haymarket would rebuild and become a thriving community.

Today Haymarket is recognized as the host of the largest Tulip Festival in the United States for the second year running. In the spring, approximately 100,000 tulips are planted and picked at Burnside Farms of Haymarket being called Holland in Haymarket.Haymarket also has a new High School, Battlefield High School home of the Bobcats. Battlefield High School is an excellent school committed to strong academics and athletics. Another wonderful benefit to living in Haymarket is all the outstanding new residential developments in the area.
